As you might expect, the 911’s traditional flat-six engine (now exclusively turbocharged) is more powerful than ever, with both of the new 911 S models developing 444bhp, an increase of almost 30bhp compared with the outgoing model. Both have a new eight-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox.

The eighth generation of Porsche’s evergreen 911 sports coupé has been revealed in Los Angeles, 55 years after the first car to wear the famous designation was introduced. It is available to order in the UK from today, with prices starting at £93,110 for the 911 Carrera S and £98,418 for the 911 Carrera 4S.

The all-new car’s internal designation is the 992 series (logically, it replaces the 991 variant, but as ever with the different generations of 911 it’s confusing as the 991 replaced the 997...).

The rear-wheel-drive S can accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds; the all-wheel-drive of the 4S cuts that time by 0.1sec. Porsche says that both are 0.4sec faster in the benchmark sprint than the previous equivalent model, a margin increased by a whopping 0.2sec with the optional Sport Chrono Package.

Quoted top speeds are 191mph for the Carrera S, with the 4S 1mph slower.

The exterior styling features significantly wider wheelarches than the previous generation, while the wheels are now 20in in diameter at the front and 21in at the rear.

The entire outer skin of the body is now made from aluminium, apart from the front and rear sections, while the door handles are flush to the bodywork and pop out electrically when required.

The rear aspect is dominated by a much wider, variable-position spoiler, beneath which a seamless light bar runs across the full width of the car.

Additional highlights include new assistance systems, including Porsche Wet mode that helps modulate the car’s behaviour on wet roads, Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera, supported by comprehensive connectivity that now also uses swarm intelligence.

In the UK, the features of the 911 are rounded off by two further exclusive digital offerings: the Porsche Road Trip app for extraordinary tours, and the web-based Porsche Impact emissions calculator for neutralising your individual carbon footprint.
