Tata Motors has confirmed the launch of a CNG variant for its popular compact SUV, Nexon, within this financial year. This is one such positive development that develops the prospects of Nexon further with just another choice of fuel added to the existing options of petroleum, diesel, and electric variants.

Nexon CNG: A Pioneering Move

The Nexon CNG will be the first-ever CNG vehicle in India that will have a turbocharged engine; unveiled earlier this year as the Nexon iCNG concept, it comes powered by this 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol variant of the Nexon, making this offering unlike anything else in the CNG segment.

Visually Similar, Functionally Different

While the exterior and interior design of the Nexon CNG would be largely similar to the regular Nexon, there could be some suspension tweaks to bear the added load of the CNG setup. Also, subtle "iCNG" badges might be placed to bring out this distinction from its other brethren.

More Options for Drivers

The Nexon CNG only adds to Tata's commitment to diverse powertrains. Thereafter, they have petrol, diesel, CNG—quite possibly with an automatic gearbox—along with electric variants to really give the Nexon an offering that caters to a wide range of customer preferences and budgets.

Taking on the Competition

The Nexon CNG will directly compete with the Maruti Brezza CNG, which is one of the biggest volume movers in the market. This could be an ideal situation for consumers as they might stand to gain through prospective price slashes and tech spurt in the CNG segment.

Beyond the Nexon CNG

Tata Motors has a busy year ahead, with the Curvv SUV in electric and ICE versions and the much-anticipated Tata Harrier EV. All of this activity points to the fact that Tata never really stops innovating and trying to serve the needs of the Indian car market, which are evolving.

This is something big for Tata Motors and the Indian segment of CNG-fitted vehicles, in general—a move that will just open more fuel options for drivers, enhance fuel efficiency, and offer more diversity to Tata's already impressive Nexon lineup.
