Creta EV: A Contender in the Electric SUV Ring

The Creta EV will fight it out with rivals like the upcoming MG Curvv EV, the popular ZS EV from MG Motors, and will indirectly compete with the Maruti eVX—a born electric mid-size SUV, facing a mild delay in its launch.

Creta EV with Kona Electric Roots

Hyundai is at present testing the EV Creta rigorously in international and Indian scenarios. Chances are high that this electric SUV is going to be manufactured at the Hyundai Chennai plant, probably from the same manufacturing belt as the standard Creta to conserve costs. Although it will take borrowing design elements from its gasoline brethren, expect unique styling from the rest to go along.

Powertrain and Charging

The Creta EV is likely to derive its electric motor from the new-generation Kona Electric that forms the base version for international markets. This front-mounted motor is likely to put out power estimated to be close to 138 horsepower and 255 Nm of torque. The power will flow from a 45kWh battery pack, slightly smaller than what powers the MG ZS EV (50.3kWh) and the upcoming Maruti eVX (48-60kWh). Similar to the Kona EV, the Creta EV will likely feature a charge plug mounted in the front.

Distinguishing Features of the Creta EV

As with the exterior, the interior of the Creta EV will also differ from the standard Creta. Think of a closed grille, modified front and rear bumper sections, and aerodynamically enhanced steel or alloy rims. A change of the interior is also under preparation, including a new steering wheel and slightly different positioning of the center console controls. As with both Kona Electric and Ioniq 5, a drive selector is expected to be installed at the right hand side of the steering column.

Hyundai's Electric Future Beyond the Creta EV

According to reports, the Creta EV will be followed by a mass-market compact EV that is expected to launch in 2026. While the details about this second localized EV are under wraps, Garg mentioned that the learnings from the Ioniq 5 and Kona Electric will be crucial in creating winning products as they envisage more EVs being introduced in India. They have already announced a plan to launch five EVs by the time it is 2030. The Hyundai Motor Company is also conducting research to unveil hybrid vehicles in the future.

With the Creta EV arriving in January 2025, Hyundai is making a huge statement about electric vehicles in India. It will certainly make electric mobility more mainstream for Indian consumers in terms of pricing competitiveness and market disruptiveness of the model, within the familiar design that is Creta.
