MG Motor India is going bullish on electric vehicles (EVs) in India. Just a couple of days after the announcement of the Cloud EV, another round of new patent filings suggests the launch of the next exciting electric hatchback: the MG Bingo. If this comes to fruition, MG would be a strong competitor in the burgeoning compact EV space currently dominated by the Tata Tiago EV.

Bingo: A Potential Tiago EV Rival

Here, the Bingo hatchback was first launched in China and could be one of the future contenders to rival the Tiago EV. Whereas the MG Comet is a badge-engineered Wuling Air, the Bingo gets an original five-door design with plenty of curves and quirky styling elements. Inside, it shares some similarities with the Comet, including the dual-screen infotainment and instrument cluster setup, but the Bingo is a notch higher on premium quality with subtle chrome accents and soft-touch materials.

Shared Platform, Competitive Range

The Bingo sits on the same GSEV (Global Small Electric Vehicle) platform as the Comet and the soon-to-be-launched Cloud EV. The dedicated EV platform has its advantages in terms of the cabin space, with a flat floor courtesy of the absence of a bulky engine compartment. Slightly larger than the Tiago EV, the Bingo measures 3,950mm long.

The Bingo is available internationally in two battery options. The base model gets a 17.3kWh battery and a 41hp electric motor, capable of an expected range of about 203 kilometers under the Chinese CLTC cycle. The high-spec Bingo gets a larger 31.9kWh battery and a more potent 68 hp electric motor to offer an impressive range of 333 kilometers, also on the CLTC cycle. By comparison, the Tiago EV gets a 19.2kWh battery with a MIDC-claimed 250 kilometer range for its lower-spec variant. The long-range Tiago EV gets a 24kWh battery with a 75hp motor and a 315 kilometer (MIDC) range.

Launch Timeline

MG has quite a lot on its plate this year, considering the updated Gloster SUV and the introduction of the Cloud EV in India. The carmaker will also introduce several special editions, such as the Blackstorm and an upcoming range called Desert Storm. While there is no official launch date confirmed, the MG Bingo should come to India next year, further heating up the electric compact car segment.
