Mahindra, the renowned Indian automaker, has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for its SUV segment, encompassing a staggering 16 new launches by 2030. This aggressive strategy caters to both the traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) market and the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) space.
A Dual-pronged Approach: ICE and EV Domination
Mahindra is making a bold statement by committing to launch nine brand-new ICE SUVs alongside seven all-new electric vehicles within the next six years. This two-pronged approach ensures they remain a prominent player in the evolving automotive landscape.
Revamping Existing Offerings and Introducing Fresh Blood
Out of the nine new ICE models, three will be mid-cycle refreshes of existing crowd favorites. The recently launched XUV 3XO is a prime example of this strategy. The remaining six models will be entirely new additions to Mahindra's impressive SUV portfolio.
Meeting Anticipation: The Thar 5-door and Beyond
One of the most anticipated launches is the much-awaited Thar 5-door, likely to be christened the Thar Armada upon its debut. This extended version of the iconic Thar is expected to share its underlying platform and powertrain options with the recently launched Scorpio N and the existing Thar 3-door model. It might even come with a choice of three engines, catering to a wider range of preferences.
Concept to Reality: The Scorpio Pickup and Beyond
Mahindra showcased a captivating Scorpio pickup concept last year. This model is expected to be one of the first new launches, potentially hitting South African shores before gracing Indian showrooms.
The future also holds promise for an all-new platform called U171. This platform will serve as the foundation for a brand-new Bolero SUV and its seven-seater derivative. Sources suggest that Mahindra might even be planning additional body styles and pickups based on this versatile platform.
Mid-cycle Refreshes and Trademarked Names
While details about the other upcoming ICE launches remain under wraps, rumors suggest that the XUV700 and Scorpio N might be due for mid-cycle refreshes. The XUV700, launched in August 2021, and the Scorpio N, which arrived in June 2022, could be receiving updates to maintain their competitive edge. Mahindra recently trademarked the XUV 7XO name, hinting at a potential name change for the XUV700 facelift, similar to the XUV 3XO's evolution from XUV300. Trademarks for XUV 1XO and XUV 5XO have also been filed, but details about these models are scarce.
Electrifying the Future: Mahindra's EV Ambitions
Mahindra is actively investing in its "born-EV" portfolio, a testament to their commitment to a sustainable future. By the end of this year or early next year, they plan to introduce their first batch of electric SUVs built on the innovative INGLO platform. These models include the Mahindra XUV.e8, the XUV.e9 coupe, and the BE.05 SUV, all generating considerable excitement amongst EV enthusiasts.

Thar Goes Electric: A Bold Vision
Beyond the INGLO platform models, Mahindra is also working on an electric version of the iconic Thar, which was showcased as a concept car last year. This electric Thar has the potential to redefine off-roading adventures in the electric era.
Promising Range and Power: The INGLO Platform's Potential
The INGLO platform vehicles are expected to boast battery packs ranging from 60kWh to 80kWh, with support for fast charging up to 175kW. This translates to a potential charging time of under 30 minutes to reach 80% battery capacity, depending on the model. Mahindra estimates a driving range of around 435km to 450km under the WLTP cycle for the 80kWh battery pack. Additionally, these electric SUVs will offer both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options, catering to diverse driving preferences.
Mahindra's comprehensive SUV roadmap signifies their unwavering commitment to innovation and leadership in the Indian automotive industry. By strategically combining their expertise in ICE vehicles with a forward-thinking approach to electric mobility, Mahindra is well-positioned to capitalize on the evolving market trends and solidify its position as a frontrunner in the SUV segment.
