Hero MotoCorp is partnering with American company Zero Motorcycles to develop premium electric bikes. These bikes, designed for the 350cc and above market, are expected to be available by 2026-27. Alongside this, Hero is also working on its own electric projects, including the upcoming Splendor electric model.

Hero has ambitious plans to roll out more than 12 electric two-wheelers in the coming years. This includes six models under the Vida range and four more through its collaboration with Zero Motorcycles, starting as early as 2025-26.

According to industry sources, Hero and Zero are focusing on two high-performance electric motorcycles comparable to 500-600cc bikes, planned for release in 2026-27. Production is expected to be between 300 and 500 units per month. At the Hero World event in early 2024, Hero’s CEO Niranjan Gupta mentioned that the company might unveil advanced electric motorcycle concepts by 2026.

Electric Motorcycles in India: A Slow Start

While electric scooters are gaining popularity in India, electric motorcycles are still in the early stages. A few startups like Revolt and Ultraviolette offer options, but most major manufacturers are staying away due to challenges with battery technology, especially when it comes to meeting the range requirements of motorcycles.

Ola Electric, the country’s largest electric two-wheeler maker, is working on four electric bikes, with the first one scheduled for launch in early 2026. Ather Energy is also building a new platform, Zenith, to support bikes in the 125-300cc range.

Among traditional manufacturers, Royal Enfield is the only one with concrete plans. The company’s first electric motorcycle, under the Flying Flea brand, is expected to launch next year. Initially, Royal Enfield will focus on global markets before expanding its offerings in India.
