Lamborghini, the legendary Italian supercar maker, is on a roll. With a record-breaking surge in popularity, not just globally but especially so in the booming Indian market, after breaking the important milestone of 100 units last year in India, the brand sees a demand surge with almost 200 orders in backlog.

India: Small Market, Big Dreams

While the number may be small, the volume of Lamborghini sales in India might be well below many other countries, but India is a market that has started getting lots of attention at Lamborghini headquarters. According to Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, India is growing very rapidly, and the company is very interested in understanding the preferences of young Indian affluents. It's not just about supercars but the trends that are being watched also go as far as luxury fashion, watches, and accessories.

Long Wait Times: A Status Symbol or Frustration?

The tremendous popularity of Lamborghini in India is seen in the waiting lists the company has on the books for its highly sought models. The newly launched Revuelto order book is closed for three years! Similar is the case with the Urus plug-in hybrid (PHEV), booked till 2025, and the current Huracan sold out till it ceases production.

This demand frenzy means globally, the company is sitting on a whopping backlog of orders—nearly 20,000 units, valued at over Euro 6 billion, or more than Rs 48,000 crore. India contributes to that with a reported backlog of almost 200 orders. And here is the rub: the scarcity and wait times are regarded as a status symbol by some, adding to the car's exclusivity.

How to Make It Work: Growth Versus Exclusivity

Winkelmann said that Lamborghini is committed to meeting the growing demand but has not lost its brand exclusivity. He admitted the long waiting time and hinted at expanding more capacity if the brand needed to but emphasized balance. He said that the waiting should be more than a year. They could add more capacity, but they would not do it as they are not pushing volumes.

The Future of Lamborghini in India: Expansion and Growth

Francesco Foscini, head of sales for Lamborghini, admitted huge future growth potential in India since the number of millionaires is now increasing hugely and the economy is booming. He said that India has the potential to become the third or fourth biggest economy in the world. He further added that high taxation, a saving culture, and road infrastructure are currently the challenges

The brand has committed itself to the Indian market and has expansion plans for its dealership network. It has three dealerships at present, and Foscini believes that one more could be added to further strengthen the brand presence and respond to the rising demand for these exquisite supercars.

The Lamborghini success story in India is a testimonial to the brand's undying appeal and its ability to adapt to changing market trends. With responsible growth and strategic expansion, Lamborghini is all set to continue its winning streak in the Indian luxury car market.
