Pit stops are making a comeback in Formula E after seven years. Instead of changing batteries like before, the new "Pit Boost" will require drivers to stop for a quick recharge. This new rule will be introduced at the Jeddah E-Prix on February 14-15.
What is Pit Boost?
Pit Boost is a mandatory pit stop where drivers will recharge their car’s battery by 10 percent using a 600kW fast charger. Formula E says this recharge will take about 30 seconds. For comparison, the Mercedes-Benz EQS, one of the fastest chargers in India, charges at 200kW.
In earlier seasons, drivers had to switch cars during races because the batteries couldn’t last for the entire distance. Now, pit stops are returning, not out of necessity, but to highlight the latest fast-charging technology.
Combined with the existing "Attack Mode," which temporarily boosts power and activates all-wheel drive, Pit Boost will add another layer of strategy to the races. Only one car per team can use the pit stop at a time, meaning teams will have to carefully decide when to stop. They’ll need to balance the extra energy benefit with the risk of losing positions on the track.
Alberto Longo, co-founder and Chief Championship Officer of Formula E, said, “After extensive testing, we’re excited to introduce this groundbreaking technology. It’s one of the biggest and most innovative changes in motorsport. Pit Boost will push teams and drivers to make quick, high-stakes decisions. It will create thrilling moments, surprise twists, and highlight human creativity. This technology not only benefits Formula E but also shows the potential of electric cars for everyday use.”

Pit Boost to Start at Jeddah E-Prix
After more than two years of testing, the new feature will debut at the Jeddah E-Prix. Formula E plans to use it at other races with back-to-back rounds, possibly in Monaco, Tokyo, Shanghai, Berlin, and London.
Teams will get all the details about Pit Boost, such as which laps they can use it, 21 days before the race. Only two pit crew members are allowed to work on the car during Pit Boost, and a third crew member will handle stopping and releasing the car.
