W14 Formula 1 car has been revealed for the 2023 season and is back with a black livery. There's a more practical reason why the team didn't go with its typical silver scheme this time around, with the exposed carbon fiber aiding in weight loss.

The new Mercedes W14

The most noticeable difference on the W14 is the new livery. Mercedes previously used a black livery to express its anti-racism message in 2020 and 2021. But, in the 2023 car, it helps reduce total weight, with the team drawing inspiration from the original Silver Arrows.

For the time being, Mercedes has revealed computer-generated photos of an "early iteration" of the W14. Yet, it appears that the team has kept the narrow side-pods of its predecessor. Mercedes said it had adjusted to better match "the aerodynamic characteristics to the demands of the aero regulations." This features a lighter chassis, updated suspension geometry, cooling system changes, and redesigned engine cover gulley profiling.

Mercedes promises improvements from last year's lessons

The W14 will be responsible for restoring Mercedes to championship-winning status. Following a difficult start to the 2022 season due to porpoising, Mercedes appeared to recover towards the end of the season, with George Russell winning in Brazil ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

Mercedes claims that the W14 features "bold solutions" after absorbing all of its 2022 learnings. "We tried to accomplish with the W13 last year but couldn't because of resource restrictions,” Technical Director Mike Elliott remarked.

Mercedes is one of the teams that has kept its driver line up the same this year, with Lewis Hamilton driving alongside George Russell. Both will be driving the W14 for the first time in Silverstone later today.

The official pre-season testing for the 2023 Formula One season begins in Bahrain on February 23. The inaugural race will occur on the same track on March 3-5.
