Max Verstappen's latest Monza triumph redefines F1 history, securing an unprecedented 10 consecutive race victories. In a spectacular Red Bull performance, Sergio Perez claimed second place, sealing a remarkable 1-2 finish. Ferrari, defending their honor on home turf, witnessed Carlos Sainz, the pole-sitter, valiantly fend off Verstappen for the initial 14 laps, marking the longest stint led by a non-Red Bull driver this season. Sainz, however, settled for a podium finish, taking third place.
Verstappen makes history at Monza
Verstappen's relentless pursuit of victory faced its sternest test at Monza this season. Ferrari's strategic choice of a low-drag setup paid off, granting Carlos Sainz a thrilling pole position on Saturday. However, this setup also meant Sainz had to grapple with rear tire degradation during the race.
As the laps unfolded, Verstappen increased the pressure on Sainz, ultimately pushing his Ferrari rival into an error at the first chicane on Lap 15. Verstappen executed a bold move around the outside at Curva Grande and, in his characteristic style, proceeded to establish a comfortable lead.
Verstappen, reflecting on his incredible 10 consecutive wins, expressed his disbelief and the sheer enjoyment of the challenge he faced that day. He has now surpassed Sebastian Vettel's 2013 record for the most consecutive F1 race victories.
He acknowledged their good pace and tire management but pointed out Ferrari's remarkable top speed advantage. Closing in and making a pass at Turn 1 was an arduous task. Verstappen had to apply pressure until Carlos Sainz eventually made an error by locking up. Verstappen capitalized on this, gaining better traction out of Turn 2, allowing him to maintain his race pace.
Notably, Sergio Perez also outperformed the Ferrari drivers, securing Red Bull's sixth 1-2 finish of the year.
At their home race, the Ferrari duo of Sainz and Charles Leclerc delivered thrilling excitement for fans. They engaged in a wheel-to-wheel battle that intensified until the checkered flag, featuring several heart-stopping moments, including a significant lock-up by Leclerc on the final lap.
Sainz showcased his defensive prowess, skillfully fending off his teammate and ultimately clinching the final spot on the podium.
Mercedes secured crucial points as both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton successfully navigated their way past five-second time penalties to secure fifth and sixth places, respectively. Alex Albon continued his impressive form, surpassing his performance in the Dutch GP by finishing in seventh.
Lando Norris, representing McLaren, secured the eighth position, followed closely by Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Alfa Romeo's Valtteri Bottas.
