Bajaj Auto has touched the sales figure of 2 lakh units with its e-scooter Chetak in the Indian market. The achievement becomes more brilliant in view that the firm had faced a host of challenges initially.

Slow Start, Rapid Growth

Launched in 2020, Chetak got off to a slow start because of the pandemic and limited availability. Sold only through KTM showrooms and only in two cities, it's no surprise that the numbers were small. FY2024 really turned the tables though as sales surged to 1,15,627 units from the previous year's 31,485 units—huge jump.

Expanding Reach and New Variants

To feed this growth, Bajaj Auto further multiplied the reach of Chetak by introducing new variants and expansion of dealer network. Now, it offers three variants of Chetak—2901, Urbane, and Premium—catering to the divergent needs and pockets of customers. Besides, Bajaj is rapidly spreading its dealership network, with plans to touch about 600 showrooms in a few months.

Strong Market Performance

Success is borne out of the fact that Chetak has good performance in markets. In the first half of 2024, Bajaj Auto sold 66,512 units of Chetak, carving out a gain of 13% in the electric two-wheeler market. This was quite an increase from 5.51% in the same period last year.

Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Success

The journey of Bajaj Auto with the Chetak has been one of great resilience and adaptability. After the initial hiccups, the company was able to place Chetak as a very formidable product cued into the burgeoning electric two-wheeler market. With continuous geographical and product portfolio expansion, Bajaj Auto is much better placed in strengthening its position in the realm of electric mobility.

The success story of Chetak underlines the emerging demand for EVs in India, while reflecting on the potential for growth in this segment. The entry of more players will only add to the competition and, hence, benefit consumers in terms of options and pricing.

The success of Bajaj Auto with the Chetak bodes well for the electric vehicle industry in India—that does move ahead and proves that if the strategy and execution are right, electric vehicles take off in this country.
