Volkswagen is set to unveil its ID 2 urban electric car on March 15 at an event that will also discuss the brand's new design language and future goals. The long-awaited EV has been entirely overhauled on the inside and out, and the event's social media hashtag (#VWforthepeople) indicates that Volkswagen is now ready to reveal the new mass-market hatchback.
The compact five-seater is expected to go on sale in 2025 at a base price of €22,500 (approximately Rs 19.55 lakh) in today's money, according to Volkswagen officials who spoke to our sister site, Autocar UK.
Platform
According to sources, the Volkswagen ID 2 will be the first VW to be built on the MEB-Plus platform, which is an updated version of today's popular MEB electric car structure that includes new LFP (lithium iron phosphate) prismatic battery cells and charging speeds of up to 200kW, among other innovations.
At this time, the ID 2 will only be available with a single motor and front-wheel drive. VW sources, on the other hand, indicate that the MEB-Plus platform will accommodate dual-motor, four-wheel-drive versions and that such a configuration cannot be ruled out in the future.
"It will be relatively lightweight by electric car standards, weighing between 1,600kg and 1,700kg," a source told Autocar UK. In another key step, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer has approved the restoration of the GTI badge. It is set to replace the GTX model, paving the way for the first fully electric Volkswagen Golf GTI.
The rotary controller, a first for VW, is meant to enhance the touchscreen controls seen on existing Volkswagen models. It is intended to replace the slider system, which was originally shown on the ID 3 in 2020.
Under Schäfer, the significant revisions to the ID 2 are part of a "total reset" for the VW brand and its ID electric car strategy.
