The X-Trail SUV could be the car to spearhead Nissan's comeback into the Indian car market. Now, this could turn out to be very exciting news for those who have a thing or two for Nissan.
Limited Numbers and Engine Options
The X-Trail will be a Completely Built Unit (CBU), so it'll come here as a whole car and not be assembled here. That puts an effective cap on the number of vehicles Nissan can bring in at around 2,500 units, and will affect the price. Also, while the international version is available with a range of engine choices, India will get only a 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine. The reason being, according to Nissan's research, the preference of the day among Indian customers is for petrol.
Familiar Name, New Features
Though new to India, the first and second generations of the X-Trail were sold here earlier. This time around, Nissan will offer the fourth-gen X-Trail, a premium SUV that comes in 5-seater and 7-seater variants. It rides on a modern Renault-shared platform and gets sleek styling.
A Temporary Solution
Though the comeback of the X-Trail is undoubtedly a welcome development, it increasingly resembles a short-term measure to keep Nissan relevant in the Indian market. A short while back, Nissan showcased other SUVs such as the Juke and Qashqai, which made hints. On a greater scheme of things is a new product roll-out beginning in 2025 that includes a Creta rival based on the facelifted Renault Duster and a facelift for the desperate Magnite.

Competition and Expected Price
The X-Trail will compete with some well-established rivals, including the Jeep Meridian, Hyundai Tucson, Skoda Kodiaq, and Volkswagen Tiguan. Since it will be brought here via CBU, the price will be on the higher side, somewhere between Rs 30-35 lakh (ex-showroom).
With this comes the return of the X-Trail onboard, bringing a premium SUV at affordable prices, with some limitations. Maybe the choices of engines will be limited, but that is an indication that Nissan is serious once again for the Indian market. It is also promising more new models soon in order to get a foothold in the highly competitive Indian car industry.
