MG Motor, the Chinese-owned British brand, recently introduced the latest MG3 hatchback at the Geneva Motor Show. The car, which is set to compete with the Hyundai i20, will first hit the European market before making its way to other regions.
What's New with the MG3?
The all-new MG3 hatchback brings a breath of fresh air with its updated design and the introduction of petrol-hybrid engines. It aims to take on rivals like the Renault Clio, Hyundai i20, Toyota Yaris, and Honda Jazz, focusing on practicality, fuel efficiency, and engaging driving performance. The revamped MG3 is part of MG's ambitious plan to launch over 20 new models globally in the next three years, with at least half being new-energy vehicles.
The new MG3, which was created in MG's Shanghai studio, has a contemporary design that was inspired by the brand's existing lineup of hatchbacks and crossovers. In addition, it has a somewhat bigger frame than its predecessor, providing greater comfort and room.
Power and Performance
With its Hybrid Plus technology, the MG3 (MG's first foray into non-plug-in hybrids) establishes a new benchmark. With this setup, a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 102 horsepower and an electric motor with 108 horsepower combine to produce 195 horsepower. This gives the MG3, which can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 8.0 seconds, a major advantage over its hybrid rivals.
Unlike the previous MG3, which had a 5-speed automated manual or 4-speed automatic transmission, the new model features a 3-speed automatic gearbox from the get-go, with plans to introduce a manual version later. MG highlights the advantages of this setup over the traditional CVT transmissions found in many hybrids, promising more immediate acceleration without the lag.
The hybrid MG3 is equipped with a 1.83kWh battery capable of supporting short trips. It offers a Series mode, where the engine acts as a generator, and a Parallel mode, combining both power sources for maximum performance.
Interior and Features
Inside, the MG3 impresses with its modern 'floating' twin screens – a 7.0-inch display for the driver and a 10.25-inch touchscreen for infotainment. These feature updated graphics and improved responsiveness. The car also comes loaded with a comprehensive list of features and safety technologies, matching its competitors.
MG's Plans for India
There is no official word on when the previous MG3 hatchback would be released in India, despite its participation at Auto Expo 2020. Presently, the Astor, Hector, Gloster, Comet EV, and ZS EV SUVs are available from MG Motor India. Later this year, a redesigned Gloster is anticipated to be on sale in India.
