Diesel MPVs in India Under Rs 30 Lakh: Kia Carens, Mahindra Marazzo, Toyota Innova Crysta
Though petrol and CNG variants are more in demand, diesel-engined MPVs still have a lot of takers for their fuel efficiency and muscle needed on long drives. Considering even this, if one is on a tight budget, needs a diesel MPV, which can be afforded for less than Rs. 30 lakh, the choices boil down to just three models: the Kia Carens, Mahindra Marazzo, and Toyota Innova Crysta.
Kia Carens: Affordable Option with Premium Feel
The most affordable diesel MPV among these, the Kia Carens, comes at Rs 12.65 lakh. Its 1.5-litre diesel engine develops 115 hp and 250 Nm of torque from its belly, which is matched with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Where the Carens really wins is in the third row, where there's plenty of space and comfort; it scores a more premium feel for its cabin than any other sub-Rs 20 lakh MPV. While it does sound a bit stressed when driven hard, the motor is more than up to the task of everyday driving, and is silent otherwise for smooth highway cruising. In terms of comfort, the value-for-money comes with a nice blend of affordability and features across the Carens range.
Mahindra Marazzo: Underrated Gem with Refinement and Space
Launched in 2018, the Mahindra Marazzo (Rs 14.59 lakh - Rs 17 lakh) squarely fitted between the relatively smaller Maruti Ertiga and the pricier Toyota Innova Crysta. Marazzo still is an underappreciated brawny boy, even after all these years. It is an all-rounder that offers a lot: it has an absorbent ride, decent features, and a robust body-on-frame chassis. The only diesel motor is a 1.5-litre unit that produces 123 hp and 300 Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual. This engine is known for its refinement and smooth power delivery, channeling the Marazzo into a relaxed highway cruiser. But it's no rocket off the block.
Toyota Innova Crysta: The Benchmark with a Price Tag
The Toyota Innova Crysta has long been the benchmark for MPVs in India, and in great demand among fleet operators as much as private buyers. Its spacious cabin, upmarket interior, and legendary Toyota reliability make it the king in its segment—not to mention being the only rear-wheel drive MPV on offer in the country. Power comes from its 2.4-litre diesel producing 150 hp and 343 Nm, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. This is an engine that makes the Innova Crysta such a great long-distance companion - there's strong power at low and medium revs, but perhaps not so much at the top end. The Innova Crysta has appreciated in price over time because of its popularity, and it is now the least value-for-money of these three.

Choosing the Right Diesel MPV
So, the best diesel MPV under Rs 30 lakh would depend on what your priorities are. If it's all about affordability and a feature-laden cabin, the Kia Carens makes for a great pick. For those wanting comfort, refinement, and space – all in a package that doesn't burn too much of a hole in the pocket – the Mahindra Marazzo is definitely worth a look. But if brand legacy, spacious quarters and a powerful engine to munch miles with for a long time are what matter the most to you, the Toyota Innova Crysta is still quite a car, even at its premium price.
