The second-generation EV has been unveiled by Mini, and unlike the existing Mini Cooper SE, which was produced in the UK, this one is being produced in China. The new Mini EV is built on a brand-new front-wheel-drive architecture that Spotlight Automotive, a joint venture between BMW and Great Wall Motors, created.

New Mini Cooper EV

The new Mini Cooper EV is about 3.8 m long and remarkably similar to the current design. The Mini EV's wider track, longer wheelbase, shorter overhangs, and bigger wheels give it a much more purposeful look. The company's outspoken dedication to minimalism extends to a far more basic approach.

A more practical design has taken the place of the current Mini's contrast trim highlights, clamshell bonnet, chrome headlight surrounds, and hefty black plastic wheel-arch bracing.

Interior of Mini Cooper EV

Although the interior of the new Mini EV is still a mystery, it is expected to emphasise approachability and simplicity. There will be no traditional gauge cluster and an infotainment screen in place of Mini's iconic circular centre display, which will instead show critical statistics and information in a "funky" manner on the dashboard.

Mini Cooper EV: Details

It would make it competitive with the new Abarth 500e and nearly as quick as the petrol-powered Cooper S hot hatch.

To compete for supremacy, a warmed-up variant with 215 horsepower is currently under development. That will be surpassed by a John Cooper Works version with approximately 250 horsepower. Cooper SE will utilise a larger, 54kWh pack to reach closer to 480km. The basic electric Mini will employ a 40kWh battery for a stated range of 384km (up from barely 240km in today's model).

The equally long, higher-riding, electric-only Aceman will replace the five-door hatchback next year. The plans to replace the present convertible won't happen until 2025.
