How Does Time Attack Racing look?
Time Attack vehicle classes are for the most part stalled by drivetrain design — that is, which wheels drive the vehicle (RWD, FWD or AWD) and additionally where the engine and drive wheels are arranged (FF, FR, MR, and so on). Events are arranged at permanent tracks yet can be adjusted to suit most venues; Super Lap even once ran on the renowned Long Beach Grand Prix road circuit in April 2008.
There is the freedom to take any vehicle to a Time Attack, there are platforms that are recognizably more famous as they will generally perform better, or are not difficult to change to do well in that environment. In the US, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 and 9 and R35 Nissan GT-R are normal AWD models, as are Subaru WRX.
When it comes to front-wheel drives, Honda platforms are dominant; engine-swapped fifth and sixth-era models — are common go-to weapons, yet since the FK8 Civic Type R dropped in 2017 those became popular at Time Attacks too.
However Time Attack has not yet had tremendous success using media or events, it has made an exceptionally forceful and closely knit community of supporters, drawing-in drivers from around the world to go to TA events and contend. It's all about being able to extract every last fraction of a second out of it.
