In the realm of electric two-wheelers in India, models priced above Rs 2 lakh have been notably absent, save for the groundbreaking TVS X. Just a shade over a month ago, BMW took the wraps off its distinctive CE 02 electric bike, a project realized in full collaboration with TVS. And today, sightings of the CE 02 being put through its paces on Indian roads have surfaced.

Among the two units observed during testing, one appears to have undergone customization, featuring a selection of add-on accessories from BMW's extensive accessory lineup, known as the Highline pack.

Keen observers might recognize that the left switch cube bears a striking resemblance to the one found on the TVS Apache RR 310 and even the Ultraviolette F77 (with TVS being an investor in the startup). Nevertheless, apart from this specific component, nearly all other elements are distinct and not shared with any models from either manufacturer.

When the BMW CE 02 was introduced, the Bavarian company made it very clear that it wasn't intended to fit into the general categories of either an electric scooter or bike. It is available in two different versions abroad: a full-fat model with a 4kWh battery and a constrained model with a 2kWh battery.

The restricted variant of the CE 02 tips the scales at 119kg, boasting a declared range of 45km and a maximum velocity of 45kph (although it still falls short of being categorized as a low-speed vehicle in India). Meanwhile, the 4kWh edition of the CE 02 generates 15hp and lays claim to a 90km range. This version weighs 132kg, slightly heavier by 13kg compared to its single-battery counterpart, and asserts a top speed of 95kph. Both iterations can be replenished using either the standard 0.9kW charger or the optional 1.5kW fast charger.

The official launch of the BMW CE 02 in India is still uncertain, as its pricing could be considerably higher than other EVs offering similar specifications. In international markets, the starting price for the base CE 02 is USD 7,599 (approximately Rs 6.28 lakh), while the Highline trim is priced at USD 8,474 (around Rs 7 lakh). If this pricing strategy reflects its positioning in the market, the CE 02 might find itself in direct competition with several premium motorcycles that feature multiple cylinders.
