MotoGP is officially signed with the government of the state of Uttar Pradesh, promising the return of the championship into the Asian continent. MotoGP has signed a three-year-long agreement with the UP government for the Grand Prix of India which will be held between 2025 and 2027 at the circuit.
While the first-ever Indian round of the MotoGP took place in September 2023, the second round was in controversy over non-payment of dues by Indian organisers. The Indian round was finally called off with a promise to bring it back in March 2025—next season. Accompanied by the UP government, it is most likely that organisers of MotoGP will be more than satisfied with the commitment from India.
Mr Manoj Kumar Singh, chief secretary-cum-infrastructure & industrial development commissioner, Government of UP, said, "Bringing MotoGP to Uttar Pradesh does not only place our state on the world sports map alone, it also vigorously impacts large scale economic development in tourism, hospitality, and allied sectors. This event will magnetise visitors globally, throwing the spotlight on Uttar Pradesh's capability to hold world-class sporting extravaganza.”
CEO of Dorna Sports Carmelo Ezpeleta declared: "We are very happy to announce this new agreement is made directly with the government of Uttar Pradesh. The inaugural Indian Grand Prix was a key success and brought an enormous amount of value to both MotoGP and our host region of UP so it's fantastic we are able to continue building that together into the future.”
MotoGP has a lot of scope to grow in the upcoming seasons in India. At its inaugural Grand Prix at the BIC, there were over 100,000 spectators for the first-ever MotoGP race in the country.
The inaugural round last year was pretty good despite the little hiccups, mainly around visas for the teams and riders. At the same time, the government is a direct party, and thus this time everything will be smooth going forward. Details related to the next round in India have not been shared yet.
