During the 2021 season, Mick Schumacher made his Formula One debut with Haas. Thanks to his colleague Nitika Mazepin, his first season was rather unremarkable, but the 2022 season was not as fortunate. When Kevin Magnussen, a driver with far more experience, was paired with Mick, his performance suffered.

His case was not helped by the several crashes he experienced throughout the season. It is not optimal for a small team like Haas to have a large repair budget. Additionally, it was not supported by many excellent finishes. In the end, this meant that Mick was fired in favour of Nico Hulkenberg, who had greater experience for the next 2023 season.

Even if Mick had not yet ignited the stage, it would be tragic to see him leave the sport so soon. The German driver was initially expected to be absent from the 2018 season, but that has all altered. Following his departure from Haas, Mick Schumacher will now serve as the backup driver for Mercedes in 2023.

Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes, had previously stated that the team would be eager to "look after" Schumacher following his departure from Haas. The fact that Nyck de Vries' reserve driver position had been left open by his acceptance of a full-time position at AaplhaTauri simplified matters for the team and the driver, who wanted to take advantage of the 2023 Formula One season.

Wolff announced the news and said, "We're thrilled to have Mick join the team. He puts in a lot of effort, approaches problems calmly and methodically, and still has room for growth as a driver. All of these are significant traits, and we are eager for him to assist us in creating the W14. We also know that he will be prepared to jump into the vehicle right away to replace either Lewis or George should the requirement arise because he has two years of Formula 1 racing experience.

Schumacher had joined the driver academy of the team his father, Michael Schumacher, won five of his seven world titles in 2019. In the meantime, Ferrari announced that they would end their partnership with Schumacher after four years.

Are you waiting for Mick Schumacher to join Mercedes-AMG Petronas to follow in the footsteps of his father, Michael Schumacher?
