KTM introduced the future of motorcycle riding with its recently launched Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), unveiled at the Red Bull Erzbergrodeo. It emerges from the principle of both manual and automatics, bringing a new feel to the world of motorcycle riding. Here's what you need to know about KTM's AMT.
What is KTM's AMT
This is a unique design of AMT transmission of KTM that uses a centrifugal clutch. The design would come in handy to better control and less chance of stalling, particularly at very low speeds. Unlike most conventional gear sequences, KTM's AMT replicates the car-like shift pattern (P - N - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6).
Main Features of KTM's AMT
KTM’s AMT is not just about a single attractive feature, but a long list of them. Let us have a look at some of its features.
- Two modes
Manual Mode: Riders can paddle shift or gear change using a foot lever.
Automatic Mode: It changes gear automatically through rider style as well as riding speed.
- Gear shift times
Its gear shift times are as low as 50 milliseconds, compared to quick shifting units that are found in most performance motorcycles .
- Smart control system
The system of shifting uses multiple data inputs from the vehicle parameters such as lean angle, acceleration, and rider inputs.
- Multiple shift modes
For comfort mode, street mode, or in case one wants a sporty feel, riders can pick any, for the ride is tailored for them.
Enhanced Riding Experience with the KTM's AMT
KTM has features that allow a rider to have control while enjoying AMT benefits.
- Override function
Even when in an automatic mode, using the available shift paddles, riders can override the system.
- Kick-down function
While the system automatically steps down to provide higher power if a quick overtaking is required.
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
One advantage of an activated ACC is a motorcycle braking to a complete stop if the vehicle ahead stops and then automatically regain acceleration if the vehicle that stopped does so for less than 3 seconds.

Overcoming the major concern
The major concern which KTM addressed is with parking on an incline. To overcome the deficiency of the centrifugal clutch, there is a new feature called Park gear. The rear wheel gets locked through a special mechanism.
There was no word on which of the models it would be fitted to, but what is sure is that the first motorcycle to carry the technology was the 1390 Super Adventure. The all-new 1390 Super Adventure EVO S rolls into showrooms on October 22, and that motorcycle should feature the innovative AMT.
Conclusion
The technology in KTM's AMT is going to revolutionize the way we experience motorcycle riding. It is here to redefine the motorcycle experience; thus, this model is a mix of convenience as in automatic and control as in manual, allowing the rider to experience a more dynamic and an enjoyable ride. The new model would definitely make your experience an exciting one.
