Once a year, HELLA reports transparently on the company's key sustainability issues. This is done in the context of a non-financial report, which HELLA published a few weeks ago as part of the Annual Report 2020/2021. Important focal topics included HELLA's product innovations and the company's contribution to climate protection.
"Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. As an automotive supplier, we have a special responsibility in this regard," emphasizes Bernard Schäferbarthold, who, as a member of the HELLA Management Board, is overall responsible for sustainability issues.
HELLA products make driving more efficient
Today, for example, a good third of HELLA's electronics portfolio already consists of products that contribute to CO2 reduction in road traffic, and the trend is rising. The Lighting division already realizes more than 70 percent of its current sales with economical LED technologies. Since, in addition to the higher energy efficiency, they often also have a lower weight, they are particularly relevant, for electric vehicles. For example, the new FlatLight technology from HELLA, which could be on the road within the next three years, requires only one watt of energy for the LED tail light. This corresponds to approximately 20 percent of the energy requirement of a conventional LED rear combination lamp.
CO2 emissions reduced by 14 percent
"Not only do we want to offer products that make driving more efficient and environmentally friendly, but we also want to keep our environmental footprint as small as possible in the process," says Bernard Schäferbarthold.
Accordingly, company-wide CO2 emissions were reduced by around 14 percent in the past fiscal year. Contributing factors included the purchase of electricity from renewable sources, for example at sites in Slovakia, Mexico or India, but also the newly launched energy efficiency program "Think.Act.Save”. HELLA rolled out this initiative throughout the company in the past fiscal year in order to systematically reduce energy consumption at the production plants. Projects under this initiative include, for example, the conversion of hall lighting to LED technology or the optimized control of energy-intensive injection molding machines.
HELLA has set itself clear, ambitious targets for climate and environmental protection for the future. By 2025, all 38 HELLA production sites worldwide are to manufacture in a CO2-neutral manner; by 2050 at the latest, HELLA wants to ensure a globally climate-neutral supply chain throughout and supply customers exclusively with CO2-neutral products.
"We have made great progress at HELLA in terms of sustainability over the past year. Above all, we have further increased transparency on sustainability issues by expanding our reporting," concludes Bernard Schäferbarthold. "We must now continue to build on this foundation and take what we have achieved so far as an incentive to now continue to improve in the defined sustainability dimensions."
