The Indian government's car safety test results are out, and the Tata Harrier and Safari both got an excellent 5-star rating. These are the first results from the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP), which started testing on December 15. Both cars did really well in protecting adults and children, and their scores are similar to what they got from the Global NCAP. Basically, the safety standards from Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP are quite similar.
Tata Harrier and Safari's Safety Ratings
Both the Harrier and Safari scored well in safety tests, earning a 5-star rating. For adult occupant protection, they each received 30.08 out of 32 points, and for child occupant protection, they got 44.54 out of a maximum of 49 points. Although they performed excellently in the side movable deformable barrier test, the frontal offset deformable barrier test showed some room for improvement in chest protection. Overall, these results contribute to their high safety ratings, making Tata Harrier and Safari reliable choices for those prioritizing safety in their vehicles.
It's interesting to note that these two SUVs received a 5-star rating in crash tests conducted by Global NCAP. They got very similar scores for adult occupant protection (AOP) and child occupant protection (COP). So, both in the tests done by the Indian government and the global assessments, Tata Harrier and Safari have shown consistent high safety performance with impressive 5-star ratings.
Global NCAP vs. Bharat NCAP
In simple terms, there's not much difference between the two ratings and how each organization conducts the tests. However, a key distinction is in the maximum score for adult occupant protection (AOP): Global NCAP allows up to 34 points, while Bharat NCAP caps it at 32 points. Apart from this, the crash test procedures and how they assign ratings appear to be quite similar. So, although there's a slight variation in the maximum AOP score, both Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP follow comparable protocols for evaluating vehicle safety.
