In the inaugural MotoGP qualifying session in India, Marco Bezzecchi of the Mooney VR46 Ducati team secured pole position. He was joined on the front row by his Ducati teammates Jorge Martin and the reigning world champion, Francesco Bagnaia, resulting in complete front row dominance for the renowned Italian manufacturer.
The Mooney VR46 squad has seamlessly adapted to the Buddh International Circuit, displaying exceptional performance. Marco Bezzecchi led the way by topping the opening practice session, while teammate Luca Marini claimed Friday's fastest lap during the afternoon practice session. Their impressive performance extended to qualifying, with Marini securing fourth place alongside Bezzecchi's pole position, resulting in an all-Ducati top four on the grid. The Ducati dominance extends even further, with Johann Zarco, Jorge Martin's teammate, securing seventh place, making it a remarkable five Ducatis in the top seven. The Ducati's potent power on the grid perfectly complements the circuit's lengthy 1km+ back straight, and this Italian machine continues to prove its versatility, excelling across various tracks and under diverse racing conditions, guided by different riders.
The Repsol Honda team delivered an impressive showing with both its riders, Joan Mir and Marc Marquez, securing the fifth and sixth positions in qualifying. This marked a remarkable Saturday performance for the team, a rarity in recent times. Adding to the mix, Fabio Quartararo, the Monster Energy Yamaha star and reigning 2021 world champion, also had a reasonably solid qualifying session within the context of his 2023 season, clinching the eighth spot on the grid.
Today's 11-lap Sprint race and tomorrow's 21-lap main race, both of which have been abbreviated, will feature the riders in their current grid positions. These alterations in race length are a result of the challenging hot and humid weather conditions, in conjunction with recommendations from the tire suppliers. The Sprint race has been shortened by one lap, while the main race has been reduced by three laps. The Moto2 and Moto3 classes have also experienced a one-lap reduction in their respective race distances.
In less fortunate news, Alex Marquez of Gresini Racing suffered a crash during qualifying today, resulting in a diagnosis of two broken ribs. As a consequence, he will be unable to participate in any further activities scheduled for this weekend. We extend our well wishes for a swift recovery to him.
