What is an autocross?

Unlike other racing events, autocross thoroughly tests a driver's ability and the boundaries of their vehicle. Instead of the high-speed, high-risk action of traditional racing, autocross competitions provide a safe and regulated environment for car buffs to participate.

Some of the most common locations for a one-mile circuit include vacant parking lots or aviation strips. A traffic cone-marked circuit means there is no need to be concerned about fences or barriers. Speeds of more than 60mph are rare, but that doesn't mean the competition is any easier!

The objective is to complete the circuit in the shortest possible time while avoiding running over any cones. Only one car can be on track at a time in this race against the clock. This is where a driver's abilities show. While horsepower and torque can make a car go fast, the little things like squealing tires and hitting apexes make the difference.

Who can do autocross?

Autocross is open to licensed drivers. Autocross is a family-friendly racing series. Inexperienced and pro racers are alike. Many organizations propose pairing first-time track drivers with experienced drivers who can help them navigate. Autocrossers rarely let you ride shotgun so you can observe how they approach the track. Even if the rivalry gets severe, this is an excellent weekend activity. Cheaper than go-karting or golfing.

Autocross car prep: all you need to know

  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated. A few extra pounds of tire pressure may be necessary to prevent tire sidewall roll in the corners. After your first run, your tires will get rather heated, so be careful not to over-inflate them.
  • Your wheel torque should be checked. Wheels coming loose is the last thing you want to happen.
  • Keep an eye on your fluid levels and ensure they're not leaking. You want to ensure your automobile is in excellent working order, just like you would for a road trip. It's possible that you would not be allowed to participate if there are any leaks.
  • Make sure your car is clean of trash and other loose items. You'll be applying more force to the car's corners than you've ever applied to it before. Flying objects around the cabin can create distractions.
  • Take everything out of your trunk, including your spare tire, jack, box subwoofer, and first aid kit. Your stuff will be just a few feet away from you in a closed circuit, so you don't need to pack anything.
  • Make sure you've got a good supply of gas in your tank ahead of time. Each run will be less than a mile long, so you won't require a full gas tank. A half tank of gas could be all that's necessary to keep the weight down.
  • Remove the floor mats; anything that could impede pedal movement is hazardous. Closed-toed shoes are typically required at most clubs.

Why you should do autocross

Once you are into it, you will soon realise there is much more to autocross. The level of skills learned is exactly what you need to go and give it a try. Autocross is more approachable and will teach you more about speed, driving, and car control. Above all, the usage of your vehicle that you know well provided the level of comfort at an autocross event.
