To win the Dutch GP on home soil, Max Verstappen overcame continually shifting weather conditions and even a red flag restart. The Red Bull racer has secured nine consecutive wins, equalling Sebastian Vettel's decade-old record set in 2013.
For the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso finished on the podium in second place (P2). The podium was completed by Pierre Gasly, who was standing on it for the first time since the 2021 Azerbaijan GP.
The Dutch Grand Prix got off to a tumultuous start. Alonso overtook George Russell and Alex Albon to take third position as Verstappen initially took the lead on a dry track. But as soon as it started to rain, drivers adopted different strategies. Some made an urgent pit stop for intermediate tyres, while others gambled and continued to race on slicks for a few more laps.
Sergio Perez, the first driver to switch to inters, took the lead on lap three. Verstappen, though, successfully executed the undercut by stopping for slicks before his teammate and retook the lead. With a few laps left, it started pouring again, this time considerably worse than before, but the Dutch driver stayed in command out front.
After Zhou Guanyu crashed into the barriers, the race was eventually red-flagged, resulting in a seven-lap sprint to the finish line. After a few laps behind the Safety Car, Verstappen successfully handled the restart in slick circumstances and held off Alonso to win the Dutch GP three times in a row.
In the challenging driving circumstances, Alonso showed skill and pressured Verstappen after the restart. But he was forced to accept second place, trailing by 3.744 seconds.
The Aston Martin driver will be content to stand on the podium for the first time in more than two months, though. Additionally, he set the quickest lap to get extra points.
Verstappen currently has a commanding 138-point lead over Perez in the championship. He currently has 339 points, which is higher than the Mercedes team, which is ranked second in the constructor’s rankings.
Despite being only 12 points ahead of Hamilton, Alonso is in third place overall, 33 points behind Perez. The Italian GP will now take place in Monza from September 1–3.
